Cardiff City struck twice late in extra time to knock Albion’s under-21s out of the Premier League Cup in cruel fashion.
Goals from Solly March, George Barker and Charlie Harris had given Albion the lead on three separate occasions, but it wasn’t enough as the Bluebirds claimed a dramatic win.
With the prospect of facing Chelsea in the next round both sides gave everything in an enthralling contest but it was the visitors who made the brighter start.
However, despite the Welsh side going close on a number of occasions in the opening quarter of an hour, it was March who edged Albion in front with a smart finish.
The Seagulls’ lead was short lived though as Cardiff levelled proceedings courtesy of a well struck Rhys Healey effort that flew into the top corner.
The Bluebirds forward then went close to doubling his haul, heading over under pressure from two Albion defenders just before the interval as a lively first half drew to a close.
Within minutes of the restart the visitors almost added to their tally –hitting the post for a second time - before George Barker restored Albion’s lead on the hour, finishing well after Charlie Harris had seen his initial effort saved.*
Throwing men forward, and with only a minute left on the clock, Cardiff ensured the game would go to extra time as Filip Kiss’ header made it 2-2 with only seconds remaining but the Seagulls soon restored their lead in extra time.
Just two minutes in, Harris drilled his effort into the bottom corner from 18 yards to put Albion 3-2 ahead but once more, with only minutes remaining, Cardiff drew level.
O’Sullivan nudged home the equaliser before Healey added his second in the 123rd minute to make it 4-3 as the Welsh side claimed a mouth-watering clash with Chelsea in the next round.
Albion: Walton; Hunt, Barnett (Davis, 90), Richards, Rea, Maksimenko, Barker, Harris, Goodwin (Muitt, 120), March, Dickenson (Deen,80).
Subs not used: Smith, Barclay.
