What is the rank pastry surrounding the delicious porkie bit in the middle all about?

I peel off the pastry bit, chuck it away, and gleefully tuck into the proper bit.

Just me or anyone else do the same?

I don't like the jelly when it's all soft and runny. I like a certain firmness to it. I love pork pie pastry though....probably too much

You are pretty much on the right track, the pastry is only there to stop the contents going stale. Similarly, you can rip one side of the tasteless pastry of a sausage roll off and discard then squeeze some ketchup directly on to the sausage and munch away.

Absolutely!. The pastry is as integral a part of the pie as the filling, and GOOD pastry can be very very tasty indeed.

Pork pie is very eas to make and everybody loves the ones I make so I must be doing something rigfht.

No it is from Gary Rhodes recipe of English favourites. I think the jelly, which I make using pig trotters, is essential to bind it all together

You get what you pay for, not very socialist maybe but try a cold water Dickinson & Morris Melton Mowbray version. & you'll see what the fuss is about

I don't even bother buying the things as it saves me a trip to the bin.
