Albion hope to make two more loan signings within the next fortnight to ease their striker shortage.
But assistant head coach Nathan Jones has admitted Leo Ulloa will be hard to replace within the Seagulls’ budget.
They begin life without Leo for the next two months against Nottingham Forest at The Amex today (5.30pm) after the Argentinian had minor surgery to insert a small screw into the broken left foot bone he suffered on his comeback from suspension against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday.
Albion had lined up Tottenham’s Jonathan Obika as a potential stand-in for long-term victim Craig Mackail-Smith, but Obika remains injured and Ulloa’s absence has left Ashley Barnes as the only fit senior striker.
Jones told The Argus: “Leo is a key player for Brighton, there’s no doubt about it.
“The exact same style with the exact same quality we might not be able to bring in, because of finance. Players like that cost a lot of money.
“We are looking for a solution that is best for Brighton to win games.
“We have one target and hopefully we are looking to bring in another, so hopefully we will have a couple of fresh faces by the time we go to Yeovil (October 19).
"I wouldn't say he is irreplaceable, but he is very important to Brighton and he is of a style, quality and value that are hard to find."
Albion may have to turn to inexperienced potential in the search to plu their striker gaps.
Jones said: "Realistically, anyone who is that good is playing for their first team or is going to be too much money, so we have to find quality that is not quite fitting into their club's strategy or someone who we feel is young enough that is not quite ready for their first team at Premier League but would come in and impact on us.
"We have to be creative, we have to find the right one. The reason we haven't brought in anyone yet is because we haven't found the type that we want."
Albion's casualty crisis has been exacerbated by another injury for Dutch midfielder Kemy Agustien, this time calf, which has ruled him out of contention against Forest.
