Nathan Jones says the club are working hard to bring in new faces, but head coach Oscar Garcia will not bring in players for the sake of numbers.Albion’s assistant head coach expects no new additions ahead of tomorrow’s game with Nottingham Forest, but is hopeful of activity during the two-week international break.
He told seagulls.co.uk, “The break gives us time; it gives us two weeks of recuperation for those that are out and it gives us time to get someone in – but we’re not just going to add numbers, we want to add the quality we need.
“We have targets, and we hope to add one or two, but we are trying to sign realistic targets who would fit in to what we do and add to the squad.”
Jones spoke of the frustration he and Oscar have experienced since arriving, due to the club’s injury list, but he believes Albion’s squad is as good as any in the Championship.
“We have a wealth of strikers here, we have 10 to 12 million pounds worth of talent here but the trouble is they’re injured.
“If our players are fit we have as good a squad as any in this league. We have had six or seven players out injured at any one time who would walk into almost any other team in the Championship.
“At the moment it is (Liam) Bridcutt, (Leo) Ulloa, (Kemy) Agustien, (Andrea) Orlandi, (Will) Hoskins and (Craig) Mackail-Smith. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill players, these are top Championship players.*
“We are ten games in and we are in a realistic position for what we’ve had to cope with. It’s frustrating; all we really want is our players fit. We have to ride it, to grin and bear it and move forward together.
“It is important we hang in there, stay positive and stick together as a club and we will be fine. On the plus side, we have integrated some of the younger players into the squad.
“They would not have been expected to have stepped up so soon, but they have and have done well. That shows we are moving forward in the right direction in those areas.”**
Despite the injury problems, Jones says Albion are relishing facing early season high-fliers Nottingham Forest.
“I’ve watched them a few times and they are an excellent club with an excellent manager. They have a good squad, with quality in the right areas and it’ll be a test.
“But this is the Championship, we are Brighton and we want these tests. We want to go up against the best and we have shown against Reading and QPR – even with our injury problems – that we can be a match for the best.”
