Albion Women earned a share of the spoils at Coventry thanks to Lily Agg’s late strike.
The Women were dealt a blow when Kirsty Barton was forced off injured in the opening minutes, meaning Kim Stenning had to come on as one of just two named substitutes for the match.
The hosts started the match brighter, with the Albion defence having to be alert to repel a number of dangerous Sky Blue attacks.
Nicole Dale whipped in a lovely ball into the far post that was just missed by Marie Gauntlett, before Ashleigh Neville headed Natalie Wilcox’s cross wide of the target.
Albion opportunities were limited in a tough first half, but Tammy Waine almost took advantage of a slip by Kimberley Walton only to fire her shot straight at keeper Susan Wood.
Destiny Toussaint was the hosts’ most lively player before the break and was superbly denied a clear path on goal by Charlotte Young’s perfectly-timed, last-ditch tackle.
But City broke the deadlock three minutes after the interval, as Walton headed in Helen Dermody’s free-kick at the far post.
This sparked some end-to-end attacking football, with Albion seeking a crucial equaliser whilst being wary of the Sky Blue counter-attack; from Toussaint in particular.
The forward was one-on-one with keeper Lucy Mangan, but lost her balance and bundled an effort straight at the American shot-stopper.
Albion then had a golden chance to peg back the hosts, as Cherelle Khassal then raced one-on-one with Wood, but agonisingly shot wide of the post.
But the crucial breakthrough came from Agg seven minutes from the final whistle. City failed to deal with an in-swinging cross from Waine and Agg held off some strong challenges before poking the ball past Wood into the bottom corner, ensuring Albion ended the match the happier of the two sides.
Albion: Mangan (GK); Boswell, Thompson, Beaumont, Carter; Young, Perry; Barton (Stenning 9) Khassal (Owen 70), Agg; Waine.
