"@JonRobards: Anyone know if England can change their squad if Welbeck/Sturridge etc are unavailable. Not like a WC squad so can they change it? #england"

This on twitter, is a good point. Are they able to change players halfway through like those and bring in someone? Hooper maybe?? Better than having Sturridge injured as no option at all.

Posts some decent stuff about the Albion too worth a follow

Of course they can change it. Each match is a completely separate event. It's not like a finals tournament.

They call up one squad for the two games for convenience. They can add ( or drop) whoever they like.

This article suggests not, or surely we'd have already replaced Rooney. Not to mention Johnson and Jones who also got injured at the weekend (though obviously they wouldn't be mentioned in this article.)

Bit pointless removing Wellbeck as he would then be suspended for the game after the next one. How can you serve a suspension if you are not in the squad!?

Eh? If a player is suspended, he is disqualified from playing in whichever matches the suspension applies to. Whether the player is in the squad for that game, or not, has absolutely no bearing on the suspension.

The FIFA regulations for the 2014 World Cup are here:-

http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/tournament/competition/01/47/38/17/regulationsfwcbrazil2014_en.pdf

Rules regarding the squads at the preliminary stage are in section 17

1.
Each association entering the preliminary competition shall provide the FIFA general secretariat with a provisional list of at least 50 prospective players for the preliminary competition no later than 30 days before its first qualifying match. This list shall show each player’s last name, first name, club, date of birth and passport number as well as the coach’s last name, first name, date of birth and nationality.

2.
This list is not binding. Further players may be added, showing the same information, at any time but no later than the day before the qualifying match in question

However, this is NSC, the land of the binfest. Providing factual evidence in response to questions posed will NOT be welcomed round here; it tends to limit the potential for opinionated, ill-reasoned baloney.

It's okay he gets away with it, completely irrelevant as we're not talking about the World Cup!

If they are able to change the squad and now Sturridge is ruled out. Why not call up someone, even if it is Hooper or someone not first choice. What do they do if something happens to Lambert and Defoe, pretty stuffed then tbh. Even with if just one of them get injured and the other is ineffective against Ukraine, doesn't leave any options....

Does it not? Seems a bit odd to me but never mind. So if a player has no club and happens to have a one match suspension and clubs play a league game he would no longer have a suspension?

The suspension belongs to the player, not the club. When we signed Gordon Greer from Swindon, he had served one game of a 3-game suspension. The suspension applied to first-team competitive matches (ie League and Cup games) and so he missed our first two competitive games of the season (before you ask, the suspension doesn't apply to friendly matches).

So you have to be part of a team to fulfill a suspension. So wont you have to be selected for an international squad to fulfill an international suspension? That was my thinking. Can't find any information on it though.

At club level, you have to be registered with a team in order to serve a suspension (because unless you are registered with a team, there is no match against which the suspension can be served). But you don't have to be part of the matchday squad (obviously you wouldn't be selected for that matchday squad, because you were ineligible, due to the suspension).

At international level, obviously your nationality will determine which country (or countries) you would be eligible to represent, but your "registration" can be thought of as the notification to FIFA that Creaky references in post #11 above. When a suspension is "earned", the player misses his nation's next match (or matches). Inclusion in a squad is absolutely irrelevant. Imagine an English player had a 2-game suspension going into this weekend's fixtures. Hodgson would not have selected that player in his squad, because the player was ineligible to play in both games (the omission of that player from the squad wouldn't mean the suspension hadn't been served).
