Remember that undersoil heating they weren't going to bother with at the Amex and then reinstated at the last minute ?

They are currently laying the pipes for undersoil heating for the training ground pitches. It seems nothing is being left to chance.

probably more important, a postponed game can be rescheduled, miss 3 days of training before a game because of heavy snowfall and you're buggered !

Isn't undersoil heating at the training ground/academy a prerequisite for the highest academy grading ?

a cold frosty winter could make outside pitches unplayable for weeks, not really a great surprise they are being done

Was always on the agenda for the training ground wasn't it? The main pitch is an exact replica of the Amex pitch from the soil and grass down to the heating and drainage

Could they just not find somewhere indoors to train on frosty / snowy days?
Will cost a fortune to keep those boilers running all winter.

Training on grass on a replica of our home ground's pitch through winter will give us a competitive advantage worth the cost.

EDIT: Withing the context of the crazy money spent in football

Like at the Amex they only need to run them when the pitch is in danger of freezing when needed.

The heating for these kind of these things is run from from ground source pumps (heat gained from pipes buried underground where it's warmer) and the cost is minimal compared to gas/electrical boilers.

recall when the Albion trained in the old church that overlooked the south east corner of the Goldstone during bad weather in the early eighties, played in there myself - pretty shocking even by my standards ! Glad to say we have moved on !

The new training ground is the final piece of the jigsaw for our club. It will make a huge difference to performance.

Expensive job. Hopefully it pays off in the long term. I'm pretty sure there is access to adequate indoor facilities in extreme weather.

Yep.
What is the point of having those training pitches if they can not be used all year. Other top clubs have fantastic training grounds, penny pinching now will set us back.

Indeed. Plus in today's safety culture it could be possible for the pitch to be playable (thanks to the heating) but the match to still be postponed because of safety concerns for the crowd (i.e. the risk that someone might slip on some ice and sue the club).
