Morning,

At the last minute I've got to go to Madrid for the week, for work. In about 2 hours. I will have evenings free and was hoping the NSC Travel Guide (tm) would be able to point me in the direction of some recommended drinking/eating places, for whatever reason. They don't have to be particularly chock full of the local culture, just honest and decent, and if there's a TV showing sport, more's the better.

I have to be specific in my location, as I won't be straying too far I shouldn't think. So: Calle de Alcala, near Retiro Park, is where the hotel is.

Thanks in advance and I'll report back.

Cheers

Never been to Madrid but it doesn't strike me as much of a drinking place, more restuarants and cafes that sell alcohol

Try this place:-

La Venencia: C/Echegaray 7, Madrid, Spain (Centro)

From TripAdvisor:-

Wonderful for pre-dinner drinks - they only sell sherry and the simplest of tapas to soak up the alcohol. There's sawdust on the floor, plenty of space to either stand or sit, whichever takes your fancy, and the sherry is wonderful!
There were lots of locals there, just popping in after work, and only a few tourist types like us.
The only thing to warn about is they don't do cream sherry.

Didn't make it I'm afraid - stumbled into this place though http://www.restaurantetenconten.com/ with the most eye-catching item on a menu I think I've ever seen...
