Two goals from Jimmy Muitt and a classy finish from Will Collar put Albion in control as the Seagulls established a 3-0 lead before the hour mark.
But a stirring fight-back from Ipswich brought the deficit back to within one goal thanks to a brace from Cemal Ramadan, only for Charlie Harris to provide some breathing space once again with an exquisite strike with ten minutes remaining.
Ed Ellis did pull one back for Town with time running out but Simon Rusk’s side held on to start their home league campaign with a victory.
Controlling the pace, it was Ipswich who looked lively early on but, following a defensive mix-up, the visitors found themselves behind just before the half hour mark. Muitt stole possession on the edge of the area and calmly finished past the stranded goalkeeper.
The visitors began to press higher up the pitch as Albion’s youngsters were content to keep possession but after a low scoring first half, the second burst into live within minutes of the restart.
Jack Rowe-Hurst found himself some space on the halfway line before delivering a delightful cross-field ball to Muit who, after outwitting the Ipswich defence, finished well to notch his, and Albion’s, second.
Finding themselves even further behind Ipswich began to look livelier but, after losing possession in midfield, found themselves 3-0 down as Collar drove an unstoppable effort high into the top corner from 30 yards.
It was little more than Albion’s youngsters deserved but Ipswich, eager to get back into the match, continued to press and soon pulled a goal back when Cemal Ramadan slotted home from close range.
Five minutes later the visitors had their second as a raking pass fell kindly to Ramadan who, after working himself some space from the Albion defence, volleyed his effort into the bottom corner.
Suddenly finding themselves back in the thick of things the Seagulls midfield began to control possession once more and Harris all but settled matters with a well-placed long range effort.
As time expired both sides created chances but it was Ipswich who found the late breakthrough through Ed Ellis, however it was not to be enough for the Tractor Boys, as Albion took their first points of the season.*
Albion: Colquhoun (GK), Davis, Honcastle, Lall, Maguire-Drew, Harris (Wilshire 80), Collar (Pring 80), Muit, Deen, Benham, Rowe-Hurst.
