Only four players from Scottish clubs? Three at Celtic and one at Kilmarnock. That says something about the state of Scottish football.

It says something about the financial state of domestic football in Scotland, in that the better players can earn far more in the Championship than in the Scottish Prem (Celtic excepted). But I suspect the large number of Premier League/top-end Championship players in that list actually suggests that the national team is in better shape than it was a few years ago. If Strachan was having to fill his squad with St Mirren and Partick Thistle players then Scotland fans really would have something to worry about.

The other thing that skews things at the minute is the current absence of Rangers from the top flight. They had (and still have) the financial clout to keep half-decent footballers playing in Scotland, and even now have a few Scotland internationals in their squad, but Scotland managers are justifiably reluctant to pick players who spend their Saturdays taking on the might of East Fife and Brechin City.

The SPL is such a poor league that it would actually say more about the the state of Scottish football if most played north of the border, at least they have a few good enough to play in the Premier League.

Having said that, Greer is one of the the few players on that list with an actual Scottish accect, most sound like CMS, Bridcutt etc. . .

EDIT: on reflection you were probably making that exact point 'scottish football' as in the league not the players .
