They have set the standards for rest of the season now so it is up to them to keep that consistency"
Simon Ireland
Albion's under-21s got their new league campaign off to a winning start with a 2-1 win at Swansea City.Rohan Ince’s injury-time strike gave Albion all three points and Simon Ireland victory in his first game as the club's new academy under-21 coach.
Adam Chicksen had opened the scoring in the first half, albeit with an element of luck - the defender having chased down Scott Tanock’s clearance before his block looped back over the keeper into the net.
The hosts thought they had salvaged a point when Rory Donnelly headed home with just three minutes remaining but Albion had other ideas.
Courtney Richards almost restored Albion’s advantage when he fired narrowly over before Ince was on target to snatch the victory.
Ireland applauded his squad for making it such a positive experience.
He told seagulls.co.uk,“It was enjoyable because of the work ethic and performance that the boys gave. They have set the standards for rest of the season now so it is up to them to keep that consistency. It was a long journey but from minute one the lads showed a good attitude.
"Having the likes of (Lewis) Dunk, Solly (March) and Adam (Chicksen) in the side gives a bit more experience which helped. They are a calming influence as they don’t panic so it was good for the younger lads and aids their education."
Albion: Walton; Barry (Hunt 51), Dunk, Ince, Chicksen; Richards, Starkey (Rea 45), March; Dickenson, Triallist (Goodwin 69), Barker.
Subs not used: Smith, Asmundsson.
