Albion were sent to a sickening last-gasp defeat in Oscar Garcia’s first game in charge.
Debut-making midfielder Luke Murphy forced the ball home in the final moments of added time to give Leeds a 2-1 win.
It was cruel on the Seagulls who had to defend strongly for long periods but were denied by three Paddy Kenny saves in the second period.
The Seagulls made a dream start when Leo Ulloa fired them ahead in only the 12th minute.
He drilled home right-footed after being found in the box by Bruno’s precise pass from the right wing to round off a patient passing move.
That hushed a raucous home crowd – but they were in great voice again just seven minutes later.
Michael Tonge got away from Inigo Calderon to hook in a cross, the ball flicked off a head and Ross Mccormack took it down well before firing in an angled shot which Tomasz Kuszczak got a hand to but could not keep out.
Albion, who started the game very brightly, struggled to pose a threat in the second half.
But Kemy Agustien, who made at his debut as a 57th-minute substitute, was at the origin of a move which saw Kenny make a double save from Andrew Crofts and Calderon.
Kenny also parried a Will Buckley header on his line moments before Leeds won it.
A long ball was played into towards giant striker Matt Smith and his knock down was bundled in by Murphy, although Kuszczak again got a touch.
