If I didn't live in flat and had access to a garden I would do this. I go to Middle Farm once a month to stock up on a small scale produced rocket fuel cider. My current favourite is Black Rat, from Wiltshire. Got a really nice taste and is "only" 6.5%.
its great fun. my family used to have annual scumpy making weekend, gathering up many car loads of apples from family and friends gardens. every apple when in the crusher, wasps and all, the juices run off the press into demijohns. a touch of pre-hydrated yeast (some go for natural yeasts already present, hit an miss) and in the mid winter some pretty strong tastey was available on tap. putting some sugar in makes for a potent apple wine, drier and 10%+.
