My 2011 MacBook Pro has recently started running slow and has also started running pretty hot.

Its a 2.3GHz Intel core i5 running 4GB of 1333 MHz DDR 3 ram.

I have run Onyx with no discernible improvement.

Finally, I have come home today and i cannot charge it from the mains - any way of checking whether it is a problem with the Mac or the lead?

Many thanks

PS - Apple haters need not get involved - nothing to see here.

The battery might need replacing. Our 2008 MacBook Pro started doing the same thing then one day went boooooom underneath. There was a big lump sticking out where the battery had exploded a little. We got a new one (battery) and the computer was right as rain.

Go to the Utilises folder in Applications and open the top folder Activity Monitor, this will tell you exactly what your computer is running and how hard it is working to accomplish it.

Silverlight was running 101.8% so I stopped that process!

Safari web content is now running between 6 and 24% fluctuating

In this hot weather you could try SMC fan control & temperature widget which will tell you temp readings of separate parts of the machine.
