Premier League Norwich were held to a 1-1 draw at the Amex thanks to a tremendous strike from Solly March.Jonathan Howson had provided the Canaries with a half-time lead but it was the former Lewes player March who grabbed the headlines with his bullet strike into the top corner.
Albion were more than a match for their opponents as Oscar Garcia’s side finished their pre-season campaign with a record of three wins, one draw and just the one loss.
There were early sights of goal for both sides, Orlandi drilled over from an impossible angle before Bennett had Tomasz Kuszczak at full stretch to punch away his dangerous inswinging free kick. New signing Ricky van Wolfswinkel came the closest in the opening moments as his controlled strike form the edge of the box whistled just past the post.
It was another summer acquisition of Chris Hughton’s that created the opening goal, as his whipped in cross was expertly guided home by Jonathan Howson.
Redmond was showing signs of true quality and his driven effort forced Kusczcak into a decent save low to his left.
Albion seemed destined to pull level just before half time but Orlandi lost his footing on the wet surface at the vital moment, and the chance was lost.
Norwich ahead at the break and if it wasn’t for Kuszczak, van Wolfswinkel would have doubled the Canaries’ lead, but the Polish stopper denied the forward at the near post.
The youthful exuberance of Albion’s 2012/13 Young Player of the Year, Solly March, almost created an equaliser, as twice in quick succession he turned in on his favoured left foot, only to be denied by City keeper John Ruddy.
Spaniard Inigo Calderon has never been particular shy in and around the opposition box, and after his marauding run forward the full back was unable to get his drive on target.
March though, had no such issue, as the impressive youngster added to his increasing stock by picking the top corner out with a missile of a strike from 25 yards.
Kazenga LuaLua attempted to grab a late winner with a speculative drive, but it was Luciano Becchio who should have had the final say as he headed Ewan McNeil’s cross just wide with the last touch of the game.
