I want to do this before my hols., any (preferably free!) recommendations.

On a Mac use Disk Utility which comes free in the Utilities folder. This can create disk images or clone your entire system.

If you're on a PC, no idea...

If you are talking about software to burn a .ISO image from a disk then use the Alcohol 120% trial - http://download.cnet.com/Alcohol-120/3000-2646_4-10158124.html

Or there is a completely free version (but less features) called MagicISO - http://www.magiciso.com/
