Albion will not rush Bruno's recovery but he is close to a return
ALBION are treading carefully with Bruno in the build-up to their Championship campaign.
The Spanish right-back, right, is on course for the first game at Leeds United a week tomorrow.
He could even play a part against Villarreal at The Amex tomorrow night (7.30) but the Seagulls will not take any risks with his fitness.
Bruno has been restricted in pre-season to the opening 11 minutes during the first match of their trip to Spain at Getafe, where he was taken off as a precaution with a niggle in the calf area.
The 32-year-old former Valencia defender was ever-present in the first eight games last season before injuries sidelined him from 20 of the next 43, including the play-offs against Crystal Palace. Albion’s assistant head coach Nathan Jones told The Argus: “We won’t push him unnecessarily but if he is right then hopefully he will play some part of the (Villarreal) game.
“He’s on target for the start of the season. We are taking it day by day and, providing he doesn’t have any setbacks, then he should be available but we are not pushing him, we are not rushing him.
“It’s a long season and by pushing him now to make the Villarreal game or the Norwich game or the Leeds game, he could then have a setback. At the moment he is feeling good in himself and confident but we’ll take it as it comes.”
Albion’s reluctance to take any chances with Bruno is strengthened by the presence of a capable deputy for his position in fellow Spaniard Inigo Calderon.
Tickets for the Villarreal game, the first at The Amex under new head coach Oscar Garcia, are £12 for adults, £6 for under-16s.
The same prices apply for Norwich’s visit next Tuesday, with discounts available to supporters on the total cost of £4 and £2 respectively by purchasing for both matches simultaneously.
Meanwhile, Albion’s opposition team analyst Adie Cooper has been offered a revised role with the club as part of the sweeping backroom team changes. The Argus reported yesterday that Cooper and goalkeeping coach Andy Beasley have left.
