Probably the only video that survives of Moshe Gariani and Tommy Mason in their Brighton kit.....

It was this type of contract that started the rot that got our club in the mess that then took,the next 30 years to resolve

How did the ten year contracts lead to a financial mess?

I can understand it if you're a First Division club and you sign a player on a ten year contract and still had to pay First Division wages even if the club got relegated. Besides that, is there any other dynamic involved?

Did Brighton have to pay-off Foster and Robinson to some extent to get them to leave their 8 years or so of their guaranteed income?
