Virgin v Sky v BT

Morning,

Good folk at NSC, I am looking at moving my provider, I currently have Virgin Media with XL TV, 30MB Broadband and phone.

What I am looking to get is Sky Sports in HD and possibly BT sport. I currently pay £50 something, to add SS to VM will cost an extra £27.50, for HD another £8 pm.

Sky are doing Sports package for £52.50 and Quidco have a good cashback offer with sky at the moment too.

BT Fibre Optic is £32.50 per month incl line rental and you have BT Sport free in HD for a year. It says on the website I should be able to get speeds of up to 40MB in my area (Ifield)

So, does anyone have any exprience in BT fibre broadband, does any anyone download quite a lot from those sites that are now blocked?

I have no issues with Virgin BB and as its cable constantly get 30MB with a download speed of about 1-4mb/s, I just wantto make sure this will be about the same IF I transfer over.

Any help appreciated.

I'd be interested to see what people are saying about BT aswell. I've been with Virgin for a while and their fibre optic broadband is the best IMO...Far superior to Sky, but if I can get the same or better for cheaper, then I'd look to move.

I'm with BT and it's great IMHO. I usually get around 75Mbits download speed which is more than enough for anyone and I never have buffering issues on videos (even HD ones). I've also just got a BT Vision box so I can watch the new sports channels when they start. I pay £25 a month and they do a deal where you can pay £120 a year upfront for line rental.

Just changed the tv package only from virgin to sky, but kept the virgin bb and phone. The sky picture is IMO 100% better than virgin and bt in HD. So it is all dependant on the subcriber, good luck in your choosing.

I'd be a bit careful about factoring Quidco into your calculations and certainly don't make it the deciding factor - the only cashback I've had declined through Quidco was a legitimate claim (£80) for Sky broadband. Sky took ages to pay and then tried to wriggle out of it.

I just want Sky Sports, possibly BT Vision preferably HD and good reliable broadband. Dont need anything else as normally watch tv shows in bulk.

Why is it people in Ifield can get superfast broadband speeds whereas I live in central Brighton and have to make do with standard broadband down a phone line?

I've gone from Sky to BT Vision HD.The service is great, but the box broke on me recently and it took them 2 weeks to fix it (replace) however since then it's all working great now. Can't remember how much it is, but it's cheaper than Sky and I get my dads Sky active on my Ipad so that works out very cheap (the odd meal of bangers and mash)!

I switch between sky and virgin every 12 or 18 months. I am moving from sky to virgin at the beginning August and getting £161 cash back £ 60 statement credit and half price for 6 months. This works out to be a £500ish saving over 6 months. I know this doesn't help too much for you, but for anyone who sticks with one or the other; long term you can make good savings by moving.

I have earned over £1000 over the years through quidco (and top cash back.co.uk) have only had a couple of cash back claims queried and in all cases have receive the cash back albeit a slightly bit delayed. As long as the claims are legitimate I have found the companies pay up.

Do Virgin come and collect your equiptment when you cancel withthem as you are effectively 'renting it' right? I have a V+ box in the bedroom and wonder if I can use this as a freeview box if I cancel and go to sky rather then having sky multiroom?

The last time I changed from virgin was end of 2011 and Virgin came and picked up both boxes. Since then a friend switched and virgin never collected the box.

When I left Virgin in 2010, they sent me some freepost packaging to send the boxes back to them, which I did. But have to say they didn't seem particularly bothered if I did or not!

I get BT broadband and TV free being an employee (I pay a couple of quid a month for some extra channels tha the boy likes - Discovery etc).

I've only turned the box on a couple of times so far but the HD channels are rock solid and it seems like a decent bit of kit. The only thing with it is that you can only add Sky Sports 1 & 2 - dunno if that affects your planning (I don't have sky so don't know what sports are on what channels).

I get 40+mb download speed, but remember, if you're on infinity, the speed is dependant on the distance from the cabinet (green box on the pavement) to your house, not exchange, so, for example, if you live in woodingdean, east of Falmer Road, you're off Rottingdean exchange and will be getting half a meg (ish) on ADSL. On Infinity the bit from Rottingdean to the cab in woodingdean is fibre so it's just cab to house and you could get 30/40/50 if you're lucky.

Course it'll all be wasted when Cameron's porno filters kick in...

Had phone line with BT for ever but had an offer from Sky (cheaper line rental, free unlimited broadband and only a 12 month contract) so contacted BT to see if they wanted to compete with it and got nothing. Strange way to deal with customer retentions. Will be taking everything to Sky now (wish I could get Virgin in my local area so I could haggle with them and Sky)

Don't get me wrong, I love Quidco and have earned a lot of money through it too (the money I save goes directly towards the cost of my season ticket) but I only ever consider it a 'bonus' and in Sky's case they took 6 months before deciding not to pay out. I'm keeping my fingers crossed I'll get the money eventually but its a reminder that the money is never 100% guaranteed (or quick in Sky's case!)

I'd be surprised if you can't get 40 or 50 meg through your phone line.
