Apparently he's refusing to wear the Newcastle shirt due to a conflict of religious beliefs with the shirt sponsor; Wonga.
It's fair enough, should Newcastle fans do a Bolton and create an uproar to prevent such a sponsor?

Presumably he would not be able to wear the current Brighton shirt, because his religious beliefs would not be about payday loans, but about usury, I would imagine.

I wouldn't be so sure david. Cisse's beliefs seem a little muddled, considering he was happy to wear the 'Virgin Money' sponsor logo all last season.

And the fact that banks with lending facilities exist in Islamic countries too. It's all a bit muddled. I'm sure Mike Ashley can fix him up with a Sports Direct sponsored shirt. He never misses an opportunity for a shameless bit of promotion. Sports Direct Arena

Stupid question maybe, but what religious beliefs get conflicted with payday loans? Presumably his religion has no problem with him raking in thousands of pounds a week when many of those that support him on the pitch and at home may not even have a job?

Odd.

Islamic banks don't charge interest apparently. Personally I think anyone who refuses to do things like this on religious beliefs is a tool. Same goes for Christians who won't play on Sunday. Utter tools

Islam expressly forbids the charging of interest on loans..... and they quite possibly think you are an utter tool, too. Live and let Live.... within reason, just in case someone comes back at me about terrorism..

There is a muslim prohibition on making money purely from money (i.e. without any goods or services). So payday loans or other purely interest-bearing instruments are out.

He's now been fined £5,000 for refusing to wear it. It rises to £45,674,876 if he doesn't pay it by Sunday.

To be fair, irrespective of religious beliefs, I applaud him for refusing to wear the logo of a legal loan shark that exploits vulnerable people.

I'd like to think that we, as fans, would resist any attempt to allow such a company to sponsor Brighton should any such attempt be made in the future from those in charge.

There are credit card, betting, etc sponsors - but Wonga takes it to another level IMO when it comes to morality (or lack of it).
