Playing it in the Summer would be utterly dangerous lunacy, and playing it in Winter would cause chaos for all the big (and influential) clubs, especially in Europe so I think that's a no-go.

I think it will be moved elsewhere.

Don't get your Knickers in a twist lads,it's not like we would qualify anyway. Our Leagues can carry on regardless.

Even if we didn't qualify, you must be mad to think it wouldn't affect our leagues.

Would United, Chelsea et al really stand for having (as an estimate) half of their squads missing for 6 weeks in the middle of the season? Not a chance.

with respect, you are mad if you think Blatter will miss the chance to build FIFA's bank account and did you notice "United chelsea arsenal et al" being able to stop players going to the African Cup of Nations EVERY TWO (not four) years. FIFA wants FIFA will get.

The World Cup is a rather different kettle of fish from the ACN though, and would involve a FAR larger proportion of top level squads missing from right across Europe.

It won't happen.

It is scandalous.

When that vote took place, if Qatar had said AT THE TIME they couldn't stage it in the summer (ie when they always are) they would have lost, and the USA or Australia would have won and hosted the World Cup.

They must be furious, and considering legal action against FIFA.

FIFA have probably known all along it couldn't be hosted in that heat, but decided to give it a few years then try and force the change through.

It is going to f*ck up all the big Euro leagues. Would the big clubs play on without all their best players, a la rugby during Six Nations and World Cups? Can't see that somehow on the wages they're on. So you're looking at suspension of all those leagues for at least 6/7 weeks mid-season.

I think the League Cup would be toast that season.

It will happen our leagues count for f@@k all with FIFA. Money rules and FIFA will build a massive profit on the back of this.
As for how many players will be lost to our Leagues,my money would be that if a World Cup was held tomorrow and an African Cup of Nations held next month we would loose far more for the latter,
Just how many Foreign players do we have in our leagues that would make a World Cup squad.Precious few.We seem only to get also rans in the Premiership.

When Qatar was awarded the World Cup, I honestly felt that FIFA would collapse with various football associations around the world declaring that enough was enough. To choose South Africa seemed a humanitarian decision based on the rise and importance of African football. But Qatar?

Then you remember. 'it's the money stupid'. And then you give out a resigned sigh and wonder if this will always be the case.

Absolute joke that Qatar won the right to hose the world cup over America and Australia..

Quite. And Blatter actually makes the Italian PM look statesmanlike

This could be a showdown between the biggest league in the world and FIFA. My money is on Murdoch.

Incidentally, widening participation is a socialist concept. Widening participation to a tiny oil rich dictatorship, where half the population (the 'tarts' as they say in Liverpool) have no enfranchisement, is perverse. Its as bonkers as giving Lord Sugar a free bus pass.

This is what happens when you have an organisation that does not limit the elected president to two terms, max.

I say boycott the WC. We don't need it. We'll never win it anyway. Back in the Good Old Days we didn't even bother to enter . . . and back then England ruled the world.

I'm only half joking.
