It might well have been discussed already (couldn't find it if it has ) but I'm surprised in this day and age that anybody would deem fit a club to host the Open that bars women from joining and only allows them to play as visitors or guests of male members. Royal Sandwhich, Royal Troon and the R&A of St Andrews are the same as well.

Outdated views or a perfectly healthy attitude as given below by R&A chief executive Peter Dawson when he says, "'I totally believe in equality but I also believe there are times when men need to socialise with men, and women need to socialise with women. I think it reflects the majority opinion."

...................................................................................................................................
The R&A, a private club of 2,400 male members based in St. Andrews, Scotland, is the world governing body of golf outside the United States and Mexico.

Founded in 1754, it has never had a female member.

Ridiculous, isn't it? And unlike you I'm not surprised, as the R & A is the last bastion of this sort of attitude. They will genuinely think that this ruling is correct, and won't be able to understand what the fuss is about.

Clearly you don't know my missus. Anywhere she can't get me would be worth having to hang around with a bunch of scotch swilling Freemasons in kilts.

I'd even consider taking up fricking golf. Where do I sign up?

My wife is a member of a local golf club in Southampton and, although it is nominally a place where all are equal, the efforts of the male members to manipulate elections and so on to exclude female members from the committee and so on are disgusting. I would agree that all male clubs should not be allowed to host the Open, but given that the HQ of Golf is at the R&A in St Andrews, which practices segregation itself, that is not going to happen in a hurry.

Just let them on the committee and you'll realise the folly of your words.

There'll be scented candles in the bogs and tammy bins all over the fairway before you know what's happening.

How many male members of the WI are there?

Muirfield is a private members club and as such are entitled to invite who they like to be members.

Of much greater concern should, IMO, be the all male membership of the R&A - the governing body and organiser of the Open

Are private members clubs allowed to exclude other groups of people ? There is a can of worms to be opened here.

It's not a matter of excluding certain groups but rather how new members are nominated and then voted in. Take the R&A for instance, there is nothing in their rules that says that women can't be members it's just that none have ever got the required twenty members backing for them to even be nominated for election to membership.

All the time.

There's a lot of female only organisations out there.

Female only gyms are everywhere.

I can understand that. Feeling self conscious and all that but men are not excluded from sitting on committees of those clubs or that they are solely owned by women are they ?

Men might be part of the business ownership groups. However they cannot use the facilities because it is female only.

Which begs the question is there any point having a woman on the committee of a private men's club when she can't be a member?

It's a blessing in disguise. One can only imagine how tediously boring an all-male golf club is.

There are no boys only schools around but plenty of girls only schools.

Ah yes, what year was it that Eton College allowed girls to join again?

Personally, I can't see a problem with a private members club choosing its own membership criteria. However, it is rather short-sighted of the R&A to award hosting of The Open to it, as this was clearly going to be a talking point.
