i suppose some from "the shard thread" will be down there drinking this....

In less than two weeks Cuadrilla, a company involved in the controversial act of fracking, will be granted a licence to dispose of millions of gallons of toxic and radioactive waste from a drill site in Balcombe, somewhere in Sussex. The environment agency has requested concerns be raised by the 16/07/13 otherwise this proposal will be granted.

Fracking has been described by an eminent scientist as the most effective way to poison a population through it's water supply. Among the risks are:

Millions of gallons of fracking fluid, pumped into the ground, containing over 600 chemicals:
25% of which are linked with cancer and mutations
37% affect hormones
40-50% affect kidneys and nervous, immune and cardiovascular systems
75% affect respiratory and gastrointestinal systems and sensory organs

Toxic, radioactive wastewater is stored in open pits and sprayed to evaporate quickly before being trucked away. This process releases lethal radon into the air which carries for miles.
60% of wells leak
Toxic fluids seeping through natural fractures can reach drinking water aquifers in as little as 3 years
30-70% of fracking fluid is not recovered and stays in the ground

Cuadrilla has licence to drill 1,200 of these wells across the Sussex Downs, not to mention the numerous substations and mile upon mile of pipeline. This is nothing short of the wholesale industrialisation of the Sussex countryside along with the irreversible pollution of our drinking water.

Please help stop this from happening by taking 2 minutes to sign this petition to the environment Agency before the closing date of the 16th of July. Every single person makes a difference and with your help we can protect our home for ourselves and future generations from the threat of greedy corporations whose only concerns are increased profits. Thank you.

I'm all for it. We need all the energy we can get. People will complain if they have no electricity in a coming bad winter.

Either we make this work, or in ten years we will be completely at the mercy of Russia for our gas needs, not a happy situation when at a moments notice they can turn the tap off just because they have some perceived foreign policy dispute with the West. (They already have a track record in doing this)

Most of the article quoted above is emotive, unsubstantiated propaganda, just what you would expect from a 'green' petition I guess.

wow. some people really dont like the idea of fracking so will make up any old rubbish. and some will believe it.

wheres this toxic and radio active waste come from? and if, as is told elsewhere, the fracking fluid is secret and unknown, how come the author knows there is 600 chemicals and thier detailed effects? all fear mongering bollocks.

have a look at the present fracking site at Balcombe - every London commuter will have been past it, just next the railway, bearly noticed.

Total scaremongering. We would be foolish not to explore the possibilities that fracking offer; and whilst I am on the keyboard, bollocks to those climbers up the Shard ,as well!

The idea that fracking represents a panacea is erroneous. The truth is
that US still imports vast amounts from Canada as a Google search can easily prove. The depletion rates after the first year are so bad they have to keep drilling. Constant drilling and using toxic chemicals is going to have a very serious adverse effect, you cannot do this and nothing will happen. It is wrong to suggest we will get a huge bounty and there will be no consequences.

We can't have coal or oil fired power stations as it pollutes, we can't have nuclear or fracking as it's dangerous. We can't use wind power as it means we'll have all those ugly turbines. Blimey it's cold in here.

somewhere in Eastbourne
we could try wave power/tidal power
plenty of sea and rivers out there

maybe King Canute had it right

actually Canute is spelled without the a and the e
but the bloody censor won't allow me to spell it that way because it looks and sounds naughty PHAAAAAAAAAA

And therein lies the current issue with fracking. The companies involved and to a lesser extent the government sell it as the wonderful and safe solution to our energy problems BUT there is no real evidence one way or the other.

Given the huge profits involved I'm always going to be cynical that we've been given the real facts. On a completely non-scientific level I struggle to believe that pumping chemicals into the ground can ever actually be good for the environment and by association those people who live in it.

Exactly,.... there are a huge number of posters on here who will complain and oppose anything simply because it's 'right-on' to do so,.... I would love some of them to come up with a viable solution.

PS: you forgot tidal barrage in the Severn, this is opposed for no apparent reason other than it will be "an eyesore"..... don't worry guys, when its dark, you wont be able to see the estuary.

No they don't, if you took the time to read the info that is out there, instead of just scanning the headline, you will see that it is a source of gas to SUPPLEMENT our supplies, part of a multi-source and multi-technology solution to our power needs.

vast amounts of what? and if you use google you may also find that US is on course to be a net exporter of oil by end of decade. we should definatly try to reduce usage of oil but if we can reduce reliance on importation for that we do need, then that is a panacea.

the dangers and risks have largly been mitigated, with proper regulation and oversight to control location of sites and contents of fracking fluids. much of the problems in the US were from the first few years where it was wild west style anything goes experimentation. we've learnt from that.

We can't have coal or oil fired power stations as it pollutes, we can't have nuclear or fracking as it's dangerous. We can't use wind power as it means we'll have all those ugly turbines. Blimey it's cold in here.

you forgot hydro power, cant flood anywhere or interupt waterways, and tidal, cant interfere with estuaries.

Errr ..... yes .... and apparently a safe SUPPLEMENT. The argument still stands.

fracking in sussex....

It's the same people who were harping on about the dangers of genetically modified crops 10 years ago...absolute plums the lot of them....they believe the conspiracy theorists who have no hard evidence to support their claims of doom and gloom.
