If you liked The Wire, you can't go wrong with George Pelecanos (screenwriter, now sometime producer);
I've just started Game of Thrones and it's surprisingly very un-Hobbity and a great yarn. So George R. Martin;
Elmore Leonard is worth a shot if you haven't already - Get Shorty is terrific fun;
Barry Hines, if only for Kes;
I loved the short series of Frost books by RD Wingfield - darker and more engrossing than the latter part of the tv series;
Brett Easton Ellis, only up to and including American Psycho.
Not my favourite 5 but ones to, if you're so inclined, try?

Fluke (Short but sweet. Although I've never been able to put any of his books down once I pick them up!)
Red Dwarf - Better than Life (So much better than the series.The audio book read by Chris Barrie was a hoot!)
The Bad Place (A Koontz classic in my book)
The Stand (Very long but an addictive read)
Red Storm Rising (A cold war/ III world war classic, always thought it would make a good blockbuster, with modern CGI technology would be much easier to make now)

Audrey kurkov - if you like a bit surreal then I'd suggest either "death and the penguin" about a man living with a penguin he acquired and "a matter of death and life" - about a man who wants to end his life so hires a hit man to do it
