Gaming laptop - advice/recommendations

As is hopefully evident by the thread title, I'm hoping some of the fine, upstanding NSC posters (or even some of the other ones) will be able to give an opinion on any current gaming laptops that they might own.

The reason for asking is simple, my current laptop is starting to wheeze in an audibly painful manner and I'm looking to usher it into a well earnt retirement. I'm currently leaning towards something from pcspecialist, with a budget of 1.4/1.5k (pay big now and have it last a good few years hopefully).

I'm aware I could get an obscene desktop for that money but due to travelling with work and whatnot, the laptop is really the best way for me to go...so, any advice?

I have been using these for years and recommended many people to them who have all be happy with their service. Take a look, they are very helpful on the phone also.

Just wanted to add Alienware are good although I feel you get more bang for your buck from the above link or other companies like them

I know that you said you don't want it, but really consider very hard if you want to use a laptop for gaming. It's not only incredibly expensive to buy high-end components for your laptop but you're ending up with a laptop that's not great for portability. Power usage is high, which means your battery life is not good, it throws out a lot of heat which is bad if it's sitting on your lap, and it weighs a tonne.

Perhaps think about spending £500 on either a new mid-range laptop or a second-hand top-end laptop, and £1,000 on a gaming desktop PC.

a few years old now but never let me down but as jgmcdee says can throw some heat but then you can get a laptop cooling pad, parts new or secondhand are easily available too.
and if your mega rich then get the latest version.

We have a winner. This would be the way i'd do it. £1,000 squid on parts for a proper PC will easily build you a high mid-range machine.

If you insist on a gaming laptop, I would recommend Alienware, though the initial outlay will burn a hole in your pocket.

I looked at Alienware but they seem to cost more for lower specs. I've not heard anything bad but I don't want to pay a premium on the name.

Not available in the UK I believe :(

Trust me, I've thought it out and realistically it would become my primary gaming machine. My current desktop is a comfortable mid-ranger so I've no need to change it. As for portability and battery life, it'll be dragged from place to place keeping me sane in hotels, so not too much of an issue :)

Do you need to move it? I find desktops a lot less hassle and easier to upgrade. No battery to change every couple of years either.

Definitely not (even slightly) rich, or this wouldn't be such a conundrum :(

I have an MSI GX740 which is about 3 years old not but still plays modern games reasonably well on medium setting. I obviusly wouldn't advice that you get that model, discontinued now! But I'd vouch for MSI in terms of power/cost as its on lower range of costs although they don't have the best build quality mines still going strong with no probs after 3 years being carted around.

I bought it from overclockers.co.uk who usually have some decent deals on laptops. Look for reviews on this one.

I wouldn't touch Alienware with a barge pole.

what games though, theres a difference between wanting to run say Civilisation and Crysis3. if the latter, you really arent going to match desktop capabilities on a laptop, for the former you dont need to be spending all that much.

What is it you are looking to play? And do you ever actually game on the move? PC Specialist are great, you are right to be thinking of using them, superb after sale support too.

Recently bought a laptop with gaming in mind from pcspecialist!

Great initial service, great after service, delivery was a week late!

Fantastic machine and plays whatever you throw at it!

The kids and I have had Skyrim and Sims 3 running at high settings and it is faultless and runs FM 2013 with ease!

I also travel a lot and opted for the Inferno model, I went for the 11.4 inch screen, which may be too small for some but I find a breeze to transport about!

The beauty about pcs is that they make it so easy to change the spec! I upgraded a few parts and still spent just under £800!!

Would I use them again? Yes!!

Got any friends or other NSC member in the US? Ship it to their address then pay them to ship it over - will cost a bit more - but its the only laptop so far that is made specifically for gaming that won't run like a jet engine and look like a brick

if you're gonna spend some serious wedge on a laptop - i wouldnt spare the slightly extra expense and go for it - i bet you wouldnt regret it

1.5k would get you the 256gb model plus the extra cost of getting it shipped over (or you could get the lower priced 128gb model and buy an external 1tb hdd that you store your games on)

I have a Lenovo Ideapad laptop with a built in NVidia GeForce graphics card. Excellent for gaming and reasonably priced at 499.00 when I bought it a year ago. Never had any problems with it. The best laptop I've ever owned without a doubt. Stay away from any Sony laptops, I had nothing but trouble.

I'm next to useless when it comes to technology and I was surprised with the level of support Lenovo offer after you invest in one of their machines! PC world who sold me the machine were great as well but I guess that all depends on the salesman/store you visit.

The wife bought a Lenovo and I'm surprised how good it is. They must be the best value laptops around these days.
