Cat and dog piss is fantastic at killing grass, if you have animals you need to figure out how to stop them first.

This stuff is amazing a bit expensive but really works , in fact it works a little to well , when grown its much lusher and greener than the goodish grass we have

I take it you have not seen him in a while , he is going through what can only be described as a Saturday night fever hairdo stage of life , even the bath plug mysteriously vanished a week ago , ile say no more .

Biggest mistake made is to wait until dusk to water, this gives you an ineffectual 2 or 3 hours...do it in 8 or 12 hour stretches...regularly...

Another vote for this product. Great for patches not really suitable for large bare areas though.

Larger areas, I scarified the area, seeded and covered with a layer of seed/sand mixture. The repaired area puts the of the lawn to shame now.

the issue with patching, is has been recognised on here already, it either doesnt grow, or grows at a better rate than the rest of your lawn. rip it all up and turf it. unless you really want it to look like the amex, in which case:
rip up all existing turf and get down to soil
bring in some top quality top soil
level and roll the area ensuring you have a fine tilth
in a cement mixer, mix sharp sand and top soil at a ratio of 1-4 along with grass seed.
spread this mix evenly over your garden
water regularly and dont mow for 6weeks after the grass starts growing
after 6 weeks mow weekly, but dont cut more than 1/3 off the total length of the blades of grass
should leave you with a pucker lawn and much better than turfing
