Martin Samuel/ daily mail

Sorry if fixtures. Piece by Samuel in the mail.

Gus Poyet has been angling for an upgrade from Brighton and Hove Albion for some time now. That is his prerogative. There is no problem with a man being professionally ambitious. Given the option of waiting like some sad sack to be dumped, however, a proud club instigated a split. Again they had every right. All that jars is Poyet's subsequent sense of insult and injury. The club gave their ring back first. What were they to do, wait to come home to the note on the mantelpiece and half the furniture gone?

Good way of putting in Mr Samuel !!!

Typical daily mail really. Its not really as straight forward as that as contracts are involved. If you sign a contract you don't have a RIGHT to choose a split without recompense. And using a divorce analogy is pretty lame as how many divorces are sorted by just giving the ring back.

What is important from a club point of view is that Poyet is not being seen as the victim in the media

Yes indeed. That, and any monetary transaction (if any) is all that's left from the recent saga. We don't want to be see as bully boys to any (soon to be, I guess) ex-employee.

I agree it's a massive oversimplification.

Absolutely right.
The man's behaviour was totally unacceptable to TB and his board. To try and suck certain out of contract players in to your own nakedly, ambitious plans and to talk about the future outside of BHA, whilst leaving the preparation for our most important game for years undercooked, is in my book unforgiveable.
If he didn't consider that his comments would unsettle the squad, then he is guilty of being naive and professionally incompetent. If, as it appears, he has committed the cardinal sin of ' tapping up ' then he can rot in hell as far as I'm concerned.
I'm only disappointed that Charlie has nailed his colours to the Poyet mast.

Martin Samuel is my favourite journalist, and it's pleasing to see him come down on the side of the club in this instance.

Martin Samuel talks a lot of sense. I remember his piece many years ago about where English football was not developing young players properly. he explained why and what should be done in some detail, but as per usual nothing much was done by the blazers.

Samuel really gets it about youth development. Henry Winter bangs on about St George's Park at Burton being the answer, but that counts for nothing if the FA think it's more important to take the good kids to Brazil for 7 mins as sub at the Maracana, rather than playing a whole tournament together with the U-21s.

The other thing is that Samuel is a West Ham fan, so will be aware of the interest from the Poyet camp about the Hammers job.

Nail on the head. There is no experience like playing a tournament. Sadly our boys can't even get out of their groups ( or even win a game! ) and experience the different pressures of knock-out football.

Sorry but a contract is an agreement that if either part fulfils their side of the contract then so will the other. If one doesn't then the other is entitle to take action to cancel the contract. Thought that was common sense.

I think they could both be right. St Georges is not a replacement for Lilleshall. My understanding is that it the base for the national teams but more importantly will be used to train the coaches for the future. Where we fall down is the lack of qualified coaches compared to other European countries. (Although let's not forget that our very own Ian Chapman was the first graduate of Lilleshall to play league football.

So how come Martin Samuel knows all about the facts behind the case but we don't?
