Nicky Shorey has been described as "steady" during his time with Reading
Albion have been told they can secure a steady replacement for Wayne Bridge – if they offer Nicky Shorey a deal.
The former Reading defender is completing a week-long trial with the Seagulls after being let go by Nigel Adkins.
Ironically, Bridge signed a one-year deal for the Royals after his season-long loan and contract with Manchester City expired.
Former Reading defender Ady Williams, who now analyses the team’s matches for BBC Radio Berkshire, said: “Nicky was a bit unlucky not to play more matches last season.
“He is steady. He won’t go flying past his winger on the overlap like Wayne Bridge.
“But he will get up in support when the winger gets to the byline and plays the ball back.
“He can whip in a very good ball, be it a cross, in open play, a free-kick or a corner.
“He has probably got the edge on Bridge there. And he is a really steady defender. Having said that, I also think Bridge is a great signing for Reading.”
Albion will be boosted in defence this term by a fit-again Bruno, who suffered calf and Achilles problems last season, at right-back.
Gordon Greer required knee surgery at the end of the season but has recovered to play a full part in pre-season training.
Adam El-Abd had talks with Barnsley and is believed to be interesting other clubs.
The Seagulls have brought their home match against Watford forward a day to Friday, October 25 (7.45pm) due to an open day at Brighton University. Their Easter fixture at Huddersfield has been brought forward 24 hours to Good Friday, April 18 (3pm).
