Albion Women players are helping to inspire the next generation of superstars as the FA Girls’ Football Festival, in association with Continental Tyres, came to Preston Park on 22nd June.
Goalkeeper Charlotte Sole, outfield players Lauren Cheshire, Charlie Carter, Kirsty Barton, Jemma Turner, Chantelle Strudwick, Kim Stenning, Naomi Robinson and manager’s Player of the Season, Lily Agg, were joined by players from Chichester Ladies and Bristol Academy’s Welsh international, Angharad James, to help promote the event.
Girls and their families were invited to take part in activities involving the players, which included a mini-tournament and the chance to chat about what it is like to play the sport competitively.
The players thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the event and understood their responsibilities as role models.
Goalkeeper Sole, who is Albion’s longest-serving player, told seagulls.co.uk: “If we set a good example, these girls will follow in our footsteps. The game is developing every year and the standard is really improving; we need to encourage the girls to play, as the future is looking bright for women's football.”
Agg, who is currently on loan at Albion from Arsenal, added: “It’s so important to inspire young girls and show them where hard work can take you. I’ve had some unreal experiences playing with the likes of Rachel Yankey and Kelly Smith; and with women’s football getting bigger and bigger, I feel the talent can only improve with the young players that are coming through.”*
Elite Women and Girls Football Manager, Tracy Doe, believes the event underlines the club’s commitment to help fulfil the ambitions of aspiring women footballers.
She said: “Our ethos at the club is that we always want to help develop the potential of young girls seeking to achieve sporting excellence in our beautiful game.”
