iMac Trackpad problem

It's developed a life of its own - seems to be working on a ten second delay and highlights areas like it's possessed. It happened once before and I had to reload the entire OS which took ages. I can't quite remember how I did it either as an Apple technician on the phone talked me through it.

Before I go through that rigmarole again, anybody experienced this and got any solutions?
