It can also go in a stir fry (long strips, lightly fried) or steam slightly and add to a mixture of chestnuts, lardons, chilli and a mushroom sauce.

Served with?
...anything, whatever your main meal choice, chard goes with most things,.. its got a nice nutty flavour,... so with a pasta dish would work.

1. Mix it with feta cheese and wrap in filo pastry for a wonderful pie.

2. Have it with dahl and wholegrain rice. The Nepalese staple diet: lentils, greens and rice. Does the Ghurkas and Sherpas no harm. The lentils and rice create protein together and the nutrients come from the chard. Adding a chicken curry is optional.

3. Use as spinach, if you are a meat and two veg man.

4. Add salt and boil in water for 3 minutes and eat for brunch with butter and black pepper drinking the water as a veggie bovril type drink . Or steam with butter as mentioned.

I grow it all year on the allotment and love the stuff.

I forgot to say that I usually cut out the white stalk part as I have so much of the stuff. The stalk takes longer to cook and can be eaten seperately. I prefer it not i9n pie.

If you are just having it as a side dish, add some nutmeg and a little parmesan to enhance the flavour...

Watch "Chopped " on food network! They are always using it ( from a Sad Git!)

What we tend to do with left over stuff like this

1. Leave in fridge because no one likes it and isn't sure why it was purchased.
2. After a decent interval by which time it will start to look a bit manky.
3. Bin.

My recommendation would be to triple bag it and leave it in the house until the binmen return to work.

Treat it pretty much as you would for spinach and that's about all you need to know to be honest.

- Give it a really good wash.
- Allow to dry.
- Tear into shreds, DO NOT use a knife.
- Heat a thick based frying pan to atomic temperatures.
- Butter and oil the pan with a little seasoning.
- Take a thick steak and cook you your liking in the pan.
- Throw the green cack in the the bin.
- Enjoy.
