"Where there is discourse, may we bring harmony"

Sorry, this is nothing to do with dispute at the club!
It's about my misunderstanding of the word discourse, formed in 1979 listening to Margaret Thatcher's victory speech. The context in which she used it implies it means disagreement or confrontation, but I've only just checked its spelling to use the word and I find it means no such thing.

Can anybody explain why Mrs Thatch used this word?

When Thatcher said, "Where there is discord, may we bring harmony' was it a pro-pop / anti-punk musical statement? :)

It comes from St Francis of Assisi, although if you read the attached, there seems to be some doubt about that. and it should be "discord"

It was also quoted by Mother Teresa, so Margaret Thatcher fitted in quite comfortably with St Francis and Mother Teresa.......... or not, as the case may be!

PS - My father-in-law was a Methodist minister. I can remember him being absolutely furious when Thatcher misquoted St Francis.

The poll tax riots, the miners' strike, the Falklands War... she didn't really achieve her aim, did she?
