Have no idea myself if it is or is not, sure i make the odd punt either on cricket or football such as i fancy Sunderland to go down at 5/1 might few £2 on that could match it with Bristol City to win promotion at i think 7/2 again £2 if it comes off i win a cheap night out if not no worries, you get my drift, but this on one high street and lets face it Newham has problems of the sort 'Bookies' will never be the answer to ?http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22934305 :bigwave:

Yes, look around anywhere with urban deprivation and you will always find bookies, and now with mega gaming machines. Daytime tv is full of ads for various Bingo websites where you can have so much " fun ", ie, lose cash on a daily basis.

So they want a new Paddy Power in West Ham? I can't see it causing more antisocial behaviour - the place is and always will be a complete shithole.

Untaxable? it is taxed, so not sure where that idea comes from.

Gambling should probably be illegal altogether - Untaxable, highly addictive for many, at worst can destroys lives & is essentially an industry that gives nothing back. The few people that do profit from it are also essentially getting rich by playing a game & exploiting others - again giving nothing back to society.

I love gambling for fun, bet on football a lot and play poker, but I'm the first to say it really probably should be illegal.

But yes absolutely disgraceful how it is taking over the high street - as mentioned particularly in poorer areas, really exploitative - and bad for the area in general.

Untaxable? Funny that. The London Casino I use to work in was paying 50%.

I think MK means winnings aren't taxed, not that the companies aren't taxed. Having said that, many bookies do avoid corporation tax too - I believe many of them are based overseas. He may have been referring to that

Pathetic post, Hundreds of thousands are employed in directly related roles

It's certainly moved on and a lot more "cool" than it was decades ago.

Never got the bug myself of the excitement it generates but think its more down to me being to tight to gamble and the thought of losing money and getting no value from it does not appeal so have never gambled.

But it a lot more socially acceptable to gamble now, I guess down to clever marketing by the bookmakers.

Why can't grown ups make their own minds up on what they spend their money on? This increasing rush to a nanny state drives me nuts...

This ^ Everyone has a choice... If it's actually an illness for some folk to compulsively gamble then they should go and get treated, not close down gambling and make it illegal for everyone else.

I do think some of the marketing/putting it in peoples faces all the time could do with looking at though.
