Most bass players will tell you that the late great Motown bassist, James Jamerson, was the man, and that his part on Stevie Wonder's I Was Made To Love Her was his best work. It's clearest on this remix after about 1m, but YouTube is full of players trying to emulate it.

I remember seeing BB King on the Tube years ago and he had a bass player who was unbelievably good. No idea who he was though!
