So having used 'Saino's' for years we have started using Aldi instead with money tight.

Bloody good actually. About 2/3 cheaper and decent grub. Miles better than Iceland for a kick off.

Anyone else gone down this route and found the same? Actually go there out of choice now (apart from decent steak/chops etc which still come from a local butchers)

Aldi is great - the fruit and veg is good and cheaper and they have great flash sales too - sometimes odd stuff, like motorcycle gear etc... It's loads cheaper, but they charge for arrive bags etc and don't take credit cards so bear that in mind. But positives easily outweigh the negatives, as you say it's at least 30% cheaper.

Also, there's often a £5 off when you spend £40 vouchers on Thursday (advertised on MSE)...

Ps their dark Caribbean rum at £15 a bottle is belting stuff!

Aldi is just unusual. We live pretty close to the Portslade one, and are always in there. It's not a massive choice like the big supermarkets, but you do get a decent eclectic range of stuff. Also kitted the family out with loads of bike stuff from there. Their weekly sale offers are mental in their variety, from paint spray compressors to fisher gear.

Oh, and their Glenn Marnoch 18yr old single malt for £19 is a friggin' steal when they have it on!

I know I work for sainsburys but... How can you compare Aldi's tired and often off looking fresh stuff to Sainsburys? I only use the place for their special offers (and Lidl) and some chocolates but the rest just reminds me of Quick Save, which was awful.

We buy all our cleaning/household goods, dry goods, drinks, crisps, biccies etc from Lidl in Worthing. Save loads against the cost of a major supermarket. Have to agree with Timco that the fresh foods are not top notch in these budget type stores.

Lidl has great fruit & veg which is a lot cheaper than Sainsbury. Today their cucumbers are 59p compared to 90p.

Then either we have different standards or the quality in the several ones I have been to have seriously worse than the one you go to.

I shop at both Sainsbury's and Aldi. I'm sorry but I think you're just being loyal to your employer, the Aldi stuff is much better than Sainsbury's. Never seen anything look tired there. It doesn't have the choice of other supermarkets though - which is why I use both.

I knew a Frenchwoman who swore that Lidl was the best place to go in Brighton for fresh fruit, veg and cheese. I've never been there but the French generally know their stuff when it comes to food.

I find it very hard to do a full weeks shop in Aldi

I can in Lidl but from memory, what they stock in GB is much closer to what they stock in Germany, the same as when they opened here. They now sell a lot of brands at what would be Asda prices as well as slightly reduced range of their own stuff at their own normal prices.

Both of them have very good quality veg, particularly compared to Tesco. The Aldi steaks are the best I've ever had outside a specialist butcher.

I only go to Sainsburys for cat treats and tonic water which you can't get from Aldi or Lidl. No complaints with their stock, cheaper and just as good

I shop at both. It's a case of picking the best from each.

Is Aldi the one with loads of German brands in it? Our one in Canterbury shut down before i got the chance to try it out. There's now a Waitrose opposite - the best for food quality IMO, but obviously the worst for price and special offers - no BOGOFs, the odd 20p off here and there, but a great selection of alcohol, especially good on quality gins and vodkas.

I work for Sainsbury's as well, and the main reason i shop there is my staff discount - 10% (sometimes higher) is a great help on the weekly shop. We occasionally get bits from Aldi, or Lidl etc but i wouldn't be able to do a full week shop in there.

At least it isn't Tesco.

I am fortunate enough to have Waitrose, Morrisons, Lidl and Tesco within 5', plus a Sainsbury local and a soon to open M & S food in a local filling station. I use all of them to a greater or lesser degree and am a big Lidl fan, a lot of their own brand stuff is excellent even if you have never heard of the brand, and some offers in Waitrose undercut all the others.

Because supermarkets like Sainsburys have conned people for years that vegetables (for instance) are only edible if they could be entered into a beauty contest.

As someone who works in the motorcycle industry, I will happily inform you that this stuff is poor quality tat, similar tat is available elsewhere but at higher prices. They also sell cheap fishing kit at times, that is also tat.

I get stuff delivered by Ocado and if you are careful there is a good trade off between quality and price, but I top up from Lidl, Aldi and Wilkinsons, especially for household stuff. Currently Lidl heads it for me, I am always finding something new and interesting in there and love that they sell some really unusual food. This week I bought a couple of packs of cuttlefish. The fruit and veg selection today was not massive, but the quality was tops. I got green and white asparagus, plus some tasty flat peaches.
