Buying a Cat D car

I've seen a lovely 09 golf that I like but is highlighted as a car d...

It's about 1k cheaper than the other golfs but what I have read about it, is that the body work damage was more than the value of the car. The cars about 8k. I've seen the body work and its mint...

I have heard it may be hard to insure. Is it worth going for? If cat D is just superficial damage and its been repaired and look fine... What's the problem..

Any advise from the wise posters of NSC

Ps dunno if its a good or bad thing always using NSC as my wise old owl

phone an insurer or two to find out what effect it has, if you like the price go get it. it might (i dont know just a thought) reduce the number of insurers willing to cover, with the follow on effect on price competitivness. and it will be more difficult to sell on of course, have to sell for less, but then you got for less.

Cool. So need to check with insurer and get rac or someone to check. I understand I won't b able to sell it in as well.

Cat d seem like very minor cosmetic stuff but the car looks mint. Will see how it pans out but well want it...

Thanks guys

Like the sellers is doing now he had declared that it is a cat D and you are weighting should you buy it.

Your interested because its cheaper, the same will happen when you come to sell. Not much diffrent.
Ask if they have any pictures of it in its damaged condition. a lot of repairers do this to show the extent of the damage if its minor knowing its going to be sold on as Cat c,d to reassure the new buyer that it wasn't a multi rolled car etc.
But if a rac/AA inspection passes it all good.

Cat d may appear fine and as other posters have said think about insurance and future sales value.

The other matter I would suggest you consider is that whilst a car may appear perfect there could be chassis damage. You should check for this which can be costly - and should it require work on a jig etc this could be the reason it has been non commercial to repair and has been written off.

Good luck

Doing the AA rac inspection tomorrow... Just seen the car... Look wicked... Damage was done to the boot so mechanically should be fine but will get the AA or rac to check. It has passed two mots since too...

It 6k and all the other are 9k...

The other thing is that although I'm getting it 20% cheaper .. I'm planning on having it for a good few years so when it comes to selling it 20% off say 3k isn't much... 20% off 9k is a big chunk...

Cheers guys...

I love NSC... When there isn't any bickering ;)

Once the car is repaired it has to be taken for a full inspection to Check it is road worthy,

Don't you think this would have been checked hence why it was only a cat D, it would have been taken by the insurers to have a check over after the crash, and you have to notify the dvla of all the problems with the car as its now printed on the v5

Yea cat d doesnt need the VIC test.

As it goes i tried to haggle the guy down by £300 and he got a bit rude. I then asked him if he wouldnt budge on the price could he pay for the AA inspection and he told me that was my problem. So needless to say i am not getting it now. I had a buyer for my car at a good price but i shall just let that go and stick with my car.

I know that that may only be minor cosmetic damage on the car however it just didnt sit well with me that he didnt know the history of the damage and i couldnt find it out without contacting the previous name on the log book.
