Angry Spanish supporters are calling on their club to make an offer to Gus Poyet.
Real Zaragoza fans see the Albion boss as the man to lead their side back to the top flight after a disastrous season.
Boss Manolo Jiménez is expected to leave Zaragoza after their relegation was sealed by home defeat to Atletico Madrid on Saturday.
Poyet has previously said it was his “destiny” to one day return to the club where he made his name in Europe as a dynamic attacking midfielder in the 1990s.
But the prospect of second tier football and a restricted budget would hinder any attempt to bring him back.
Poyet remains under contract with Albion until 2016 but is currently suspended by the club.
Chief executive Paul Barber has confirmed the Seagulls will take “as long as is necessary” over internal procedures involving Poyet and colleagues Mauricio Taricco and Charlie Oatway, who are also suspended.
A source close to Real Zaragoza last night told The Argus: “It has been spoken about and there is interest in him coming back. The supporters and the club would want Poyet to come but it’s hard to see that he would want to.”
Meanwhile Nottingham Forest are keen to sign David if he opts not to accept a contract offer from Albion.
The former Athletic Bilbao playmaker is also attracting interest in Spain.
