Hi Everyone!

Ive been away for most of the day today as things have really kicked off here in the last 24 hours. Anti-government protest in most big cities and widespread use of tear gas et al. If you're planning on coming out here you might want to think twice right now.

For the last hour people have been out on their balconies around us banging on pots and pans and switching their lights on and off. Will this get anywhere I dont know but we'll see.

Oh well the two weeks are booked already in August for Marmaris.

As a resident what exactly is this 22:00 rule on alcohol sales, is it everywhere or just shops ?

Does look to be escalating out of next to nothing into something major. Serious stuff. Take care mate.

Cheers.... today was OK but tonight its got a lot more electric. Think we may keep the kids in tomorrow. And Izmir is notoriously one of the sleepiest places in Turkey.. still 10000 people got gassed here this evening and there are twitter reports from Istanbul of Agent Orange....

Flew out of Izmir last Saturday with the family. Sounds like I was just in time.

Two weeks in Dalyan around the same time.

As you are on the spot (but hopefully not in the thick of it) what is the problem exactly? Superficially as reported the "spark" seems to be about developing a square in Istanbul but I am sure that it is far from as simple as that.

I am sure it will be fine and if it is not then you would get re-located provided ABTA / ATOL company you booked with.

Of which two years ago most of the people who were in our place in Marmaris were with a tour company which went bust. Not much fun for the apartment staff as when people left no-one replaced them. On our 1st day a geordie woman with 3 kids in tow asked if I would lend her £500 to pay their board which I politely declined.

Sorry quite busy at the mo... it started off as a protest over the development of parkland but due to the response by the police it quickly became an anti-government protest. main issues are the curbing of media freedom, the anti-alcohol movement, anti-abortion movement and the increasing authoritarian behaviour of the prime-minister and his plans to make a presidential system which will make him virtually a dictator. The big issue is that he does hold a real democratic majority in the country so whether this develops further is open to question.

After a lull the cars have started hooting on the streets again.

It's being touted on the BBC website as something bigger: 'Correspondents say that what was initially a local issue has spiralled into widespread anti-government unrest and anger over the perceived "Islamisation" of Turkey.'

That's not good. Won't take long for UK and Amerika to get involved if that's the case.

Especially with a USAF base at Incirlik.

As others have said, take care and will be thinking of you & your family out there. Would hate anything to befall one of our better posters.....and potential war correspondent!

Tweets on Twitter saying crowds were being kettled into subways and then tear gassed.
