Albion will face competition from Dutch giants PSV if they opt to pursue their interest in Virgil van Dijk.

The highly-rated defender has revealed he is being pursued by the Eindhoven-based club, who came second in this season’s Eredivisie to secure a place in the Champions League qualifying round.

Albion wanted to sign the 21-year-old in January and were expected to make another move for him this summer.

Their transfer plans are likely to be on hold for the moment with boss Gus Poyet and his managerial team currently under suspension.

But Albion will need to make at least one defensive addition this summer.

Van Dijk has been left out of the Dutch squad for the European Under-21 Championship in Israel but remains hot property.

He revealed: “There is contact with a number of clubs and PSV is one of them.”

Albion have triggered a one-year contract extension with skipper Gordon Greer but fellow centre-back Adam El-Abd has yet to sign a new deal.

Matt Upson, who starred on loan at The Amex in the play-off push, is certain to be let go by Stoke City.

Poyet has been linked with the vacant managerial post at the Britannia Stadium if he parts company with Albion.

Malky Mackay is also now believed to be a contender to succeed Tony Pulis in the Potteries.

The major development over the weekend on the managerial merry-go-round was a report from Turkey that Besiktas have contacted Roberto di Matteo, who has been linked with several jobs in England.
