Old Steine Farmers Market

With the North Road Farm Market now a sad shadow of its former self, it is good to see many of the old regulars from there at the new Old Steine Farmers Market yesterday. The market is held on the third Saturday of the month on the Old Steine at the bottom of North Street.

Visited yesterday to get some fine scotch eggs from Picnic Corner (manned by two Amex STH's yesterday) and found a great variety of stalls selling cakes, pies, cheese, chilli products, hummus, spices, vegetables, etc.

Get yourself down there to support this next month and enjoy some fine produce.

Can you elaborate on the chilli products?

Can you elaborate on the chilli products?

The guys from the chilli shop at the Marina have a stall there

Is it proper farmers stuff or is it mainly cupcakes?

Thankfully not mainly cupcakes - more small independent food producers than genuine farmers but they are trying to get some local farmers along to sell meat. I think the issue at the moment is that it is only once a month (and this is only the second one) so many of the true farmers already have their regular markets to visit around the county so don't want to commit.

Feedback from those selling has been very positive though - they get a lot of footfall from those coming down from St James St etc in the East, people seeing the market as they come past on the bus and also from people heading down North Street.

Take me out to the ring road
Down beside the LaserQuest
A little slice of Arcadia
Out the back of the Toys’R'Us

Cos there the horny hands of toil
Sell muddy veg and rapeseed oil
Brought straight from the farm
…for people like us

There’s ostrich steaks, smoked venison,
And eggs with shit and feathers on;
There’s cauliflowers
With gritty bits in between

If normal markets turn your head
Then wheel your bugaboo here instead -
It’s the furthest thing from Eastenders
You’ve ever seen

The Farmer’s Market, the Farmers’ Market,
You drive here in the Volvo and you park it
Market! the Farmers’ Market!
We find any old crap and sell it in a basket.

Kumquats, bananas
And cheese from Southern France
Brought right here all freshly from the ground

We’ve got cupcakes from our cupcake field
Just harvested this morning
They’re yours for a steal at six for thirty pounds.
(I’ll take the lot!)

Market! the Farmers’ Market!
I’m no more a farmer than Morten Harkett
But here are some fools and here’s their money
The two are so easily parted
We’ll soon have enough to buy a farm

We’ve got flapjacks here
And sugared mice
Like a normal shop but not as nice
And this is ham just under the price of gold
Durian, walnuts, tangerines,
And little Batman figurines
All dug up this morning and…
SOLD to the gentleman in the mustard cords

If you drove from junctions two to four
And wondered what the queue was for
It’s only the credulous masses
Of urban middle classes;
In the carpark outside Discount Beds
We don’t pay any overheads
So we make a small fortune every week
Just sat on our fat arses

Market! the Farmers’ Market!
You drive here in the Volvo and you park it

We’re expanding to chairs this year
We get all our stuff from Ikea
Then give it some farmyward magic
Some scratches there, some chicken shit here
And all of a sudden it’s rather dear

Market! the Farmers’ Market!
We find any old crap and sell it in a basket.
Hey, we’ve sold out already today
Must put some more tat on display
…and then go home

Market! the Farmers’ Market!
We clear twenty grand by lunch and hit our target
Cos here are some fools, here’s their money
The two are so easily parted
And soon we’ll have enough…
To buy a farm.
