Andy Murray endured a miserable 26th birthday as he retired from his Italian Open second-round tie against Marcel Granollers with a hip injury.
The Briton looked troubled throughout and now faces a battle to be fit for the French Open which starts on 26 May.
Spain's Granollers eased to the first set, winning 6-3, and led 2-1 in the second before Murray needed treatment.
Murray battled back to win the second set 7-6 but then withdrew before the decider to hand Granollers victory.
