Gus Poyet watches Monday's defeat to Crystal Palace
Albion*are staying tight-lipped over the future of boss Gus Poyet.
The Seagulls have refused to respond to comments made by the manager to The Argus following Monday’s Championship play-off defeat against Crystal Palace at The Amex.
Poyet hinted at a parting of the ways unless he receives assurances from chairman Tony Bloom over funds to improve the squad for another promotion push next season.
He said the result had “changed my view completely about everything I was prepared for” and questioned whether Albion have “hit the roof” or have the finances to keep making the team better.
The Uruguayan is seeking talks with Bloom to clarify the situation and ease his fears he has taken the club as far as he can.
Well-placed sources have been anticipating Poyet’s departure, irrespective of their fortunes in the play-offs.
Poyet signed a new five-year contract in September 2011 after guiding Albion to the League One title in his first full season in charge.
The Seagulls finished tenth in the Championship last season, their first at The Amex. They improved to fourth this season before Palace wrecked their hopes of reaching the Premier League.
Poyet has regularly been linked with Premier League jobs and almost joined Reading in March. Reports in two national newspapers this morning suggested he*could become*a possible target for Fulham.
Bookmakers reacted to his remarks yesterday by clipping his odds from 9-1 into 6-1 fourth favourite to succeed Manchester United-bound David Moyes at Everton.
The betting for the Goodison Park vacancy is still led by Wigan’s Roberto Martinez, with Celtic’s Neil Lennon and promoted Cardiff’s Malky Mackay joint-second favourites.
