Farewell appearance?
What about in the 119th minute, with one substitution left, and penalties looming.

Would you take the petite Tommy K off, in favour of a lumbering giant?

But if it were too happen, today wouldn't be his farewell appearance.

I've always been a fan of The Beasant Principle, and have convinced myself it would have won us Italia '90.

I don't imagine for one minute it's a principle I want to see tried out at my club, or one we are playing against.

Absolutely this. Woods on for Shilton and we would have won the cup!

yeah that would show true faith in one of our players of the season wouldn't it?
The Beasant Principle has nothing to do with faith with one of our best players.

For 1990 the retrospective plan is thus:-

Shilton has played 119th of high intensity football.
Beasant has been sat down ramming his gloved finger up his nose.
Shilton doesn't fill the goal.
Beasant a lumbering giant.
Germany would have been prepared for Shilton.
All they knew about Beasant was his penalty SAVE in the FA cup final.

Therefore to gain the psychological advantage over the imperious Germans, you remove who they are expecting and replace him with someone twice the size who's done feck all for 2 hours and is fresh as a daisy.

Like I said though I have every confidence in the plan, just so long as another team does it!!!

A good point. Looking back it did seem that Shilton stayed on a tournament too many. It looked like he had slower reaction compared to his glory days earlier in his career. The Paul Parker deflected effort and back peddle in the World Cup semi springs to mind. Beasant between the sticks for the penalty kicks might well have made a significant difference. It would definitely have thrown the Germans. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Would Gus make such a brave move if our play-off semi was heading to penalties knowing Brez have a great record in shoot outs and the Pig(as great as he is) hasn't saved any penalties for us thus far?

It's not about that. In English football, Kusczsak has saved 3 of 30 penalties faced. Brezovan has saved 6 of 18.

The stats speak for themselves. Get Sexy Pete out there*

*then pray the opposition don't put a cross into our box in the 120th minute....

It's genuinely a tough one. Fair chance we wouldn't have a sub left in the 119th minute, but if we did I'd be very tempted - I think it would definitely give your side the psychological advantage if the other team see you bringing a penalty specialist on, which Brez definitely is.
