The Outsider is a wonderful book about the history of goalkeepers. Thoroughly recommended! Lots of great stories about the weird and wonderful characters who have played in goal. One that springs to mind is Charlton playing another team in the 1940s. The legendary Sam Bartram in goal. It was an evening game in dense fog. Charlton dominated the game. The fog got so bad the referee waved everyone off postponing the game. Or he thought he had. Sam Bartram was on the pitch for another 10 minutes thinking his team was pounding the other sides goal. It wasn't until a policeman appear out of the mist that Sam realised what had happened.
