SERIOUS LEISURE. THE CASE OF GROUNDHOPPING

Leisure is known to generally have a positive effect on health and well-being. The ‘Serious Leisure Perspective’ (SLP), first described by the Canadian Sociologist Robert Stebbins, is a way of looking at leisure activities and how people experience them, and consists of three components: serious, casual, and project-based leisure.

In this seminar David Bauckham will discuss his study of ‘Groundhopping’, a subculture of football fandom, and in particular whether it meets Stebbins’ criteria for ‘serious leisure’. This is probably the first academic study of ‘hopping’ and has just been published as a chapter in the new Routledge ‘Handbook of Leisure Studies’.

Wednesday 1 May at 5pm. Robert Dodd 203, Eastbourne

All Welcome

Outside his work as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing & Midwifery, David Bauckham is a photographer, publisher and writer on non-League football culture, and completed a Masters degree in Sport, Culture and Society at Chelsea School"

We must have some serious groundhoppers on here. Anyone close to, or complete, on all league grounds?
