I have a tree stump in the back garden which needs removing/digging out and disposing of. FYI A rather big tree was cut down a few years ago but the rather large stump is still present and starting partially grown back. I want to level the rear and turf it. Any professionals out there in NSC land who can help me?

Please PM.

Not sure anyone digs out stumps these days HT. They'll use a stump grinder (awesome bit of gardening kit). But the tree will never come back! Can be a little on the pricey side though.

Renting a grinder, or bringing in someone to use one, will be incredibly expensive.

We had 3 colossal tree stumps. Nothing works eg fire, so called special chemicals, but you can do it yourself I found by digging deep around the side roots coming out, then attacking them with a large bow saw with a sharp blade and a mattock. No need to work on the daunting stump itself, and a massive money saving by DIY.

Tough job on a big tree and you still have to get the stump out. I've tried both and half way through digging out a stump (admittedly by myself) I'd have paid any money for a grinder to appear over the horizon!

I know the feeling. Looked at these stumps for several years, until the final method worked. The stumps themselves are then effectively loose, once the side roots are cut through.

I used the dig it out method a few years ago - took forever but it worked BUT left me with a new problem ....... how the bloody hell do you get rid of a dug out stump that you care barely move ? Lots of petrol and a match was the final answer !

That was my point really more than getting it out of the ground. Burning is an option (albeit slow) as long as you have space around the tree so you won't cause damage to other trees, fences etc. But overall - I'd say go for the grinder - shop around though. Lots of options showing in Google. Or even hire one and have a go yourself?

Agree. Who would not want a stump grinder round their house? Even the name stump grinder is awesome.

It just so happens that I wrote out a cheque for stump removal about 10 minutes ago. I use a tree surgeons in Brighton called Arbor Cura, who did a superb job last year. last week I wanted the stumps removed of the trees they took down and they supplied a stump man, who did an equally good job. Not particularly cheap, but it is a specialised job. I can supply address/phone number if required, but they have a web page. Can't recommend highly enough.

I live in Warwickshire so no good for you, but I got mates rates from a Tree surgeon down the pub. I think it was around £100 although was part of an overall levelling exercise in my back garden.

Cheers. I have already emailed Bushwackers but will also get in touch with these guys. Second person who has said it is not cheap. Can I be cheeky and ask how much it cost? Should I be looking to retrain? The idea of being paid loads of money to drive around with a stump grinder is appealing.

Not a problem, I paid £320 for 3 large stumps to go, roughly £100 each. I wasn't there but it took him some time to do, and of course he has a special machine to do it. Scared my cats a little, I think.
