Albion Women bounced back from last week’s defeat at Reading, after recovering from a goal down to thrash title-chasing Millwall at Beckenham.Emma Whitter gave the Lionesses the lead, before Kim Stenning, Lily Agg, Sophie Perry, Charlotte Gurr and Cherelle Khassal all hit the target to earn the Seagulls their biggest league win of the season so far.
Jay Lovett’s side made the worst possible start when Whitter capitalised on some sloppy Albion defending to coolly slot the ball past keeper Lucy Mangan in the 11th minute.
Mangan was then called into action again minutes later, as she made herself big to deny Ciara Sherwood from doubling the South Londoners’ advantage.
But the Seagulls soon settled into the match and equalised in the 28th minute; Stenning scored her 25th goal of the season, after quickly reacting to a poor clearance by Millwall keeper Francesca Gibbs and fired the ball home.
Albion then searched for the second goal, but not without any scares, as Sherwood hit her shot against the crossbar.
Tammy Waine then had a go from distance, but Gibbs was equal to her low drive.
The resulting corner then produced the Seagulls’ second goal; Kirsty Barton’s set-piece created havoc in the Lionesses’ defence and the ball eventually fell to Agg, who shot into the net from close-range in almost the last kick of the first-half.
Lovett’s side scored again three minutes after the restart, as Perry’s deflected strike from the edge of the area gave Albion a two-goal cushion and earned the Republic of Ireland international her first goal for the club this season.
Millwall were also struggling to deal with another Irish international, as Khassal was instrumental in creating Albion’s fourth goal. She made a driving run down the right and put in a perfectly weighted ball in for Gurr to head home her first league goal for the club, with 25 minutes left on the clock.
Khassal was then rewarded for her fine display in the 80th minute, after she tapped Waine’s cross into an unguarded net and wrapped up an emphatic victory.
Manager Lovett was delighted with his team’s response after last week’s defeat to the Royals and praised his side’s attacking play.
*
He told Seagulls.co.uk, “I’m really proud of the girls today; we played some fantastic football. The difference today that has been missing in the last few weeks is taking our chances, but we looked like scoring every time we went forward.**
*
“I was really pleased with our backline because we out-marked one of the league’s top goalscorers (Whitter) and our midfield dominated the game. As a team performance, it worked out perfectly.”
*
Albion: Mangan (GK); Perry, Thompson, James, Carter; Waine (c); Barton (Owen 82), Agg, Gurr (O’Hagan 77); Stenning, Khassal (Somes 88).
