Californian Radio Stations

And now the oddest request in NSC history;

in 2011 we did the Las Vegas/San Francisco/LA fly-drive thing. It was such an incredible experience we're doing it again this year in August. Having just sunk £1800 on flights, we're cracking on with the planning and aim to take in Yosemite park this time as well as a few other cities over 16 nights.

Anyway, an enduring memory of that particular vacation was the amount of driving we did and the upbeat Californian radio stations playing summer tunes and the (at times unbearably) chipper radio DJ's doing their west coast thing. Made us fall in love with California 100%.

Does anyone have a particular favourite pop radio station on the west coast (with stream, if possible? :) ) that they can recommend to help us get in the holiday spirit and take the edge off each expensive excursion? :)

Know this a long shot and very out there! xx

TuneIn radio is great for listening to radio from all over the world. Try here (http://tunein.com/radio/California-r100455/) if you want to relive the holiday radio

Oh, and one day I hope to do that kind of trip. There are so many places that I'd like to visit in the US that a standard holiday just wouldn't cut it

you must mate, if you possibly can.

me and my fiancee are both huge Americo-philes. It started with the usual Orlando Disney/Universal thing (three two week visits to date). On the third time we started finding it a bit hollow and tried New York which we loved - have now been there four times in four years, most recently in Feb.

August 2011 we did the fly-drive which was epic, over two and a half weeks and haven't looked back. It really makes the commercial touristy experience Orlando offers feel incredibly hollow in comparison. Nothing beats just driving around, stopping at an interesting inn or motel... mind you, the whole thing - flights, holidays, spending money cost us £6-7k (!!!) and we're looking at the same this time.

My advice - do it, you won't regret it if you can afford the outlay. God knows we save like buggery to make it happen

Huge amount of American stations are hidden behind iHeartRadio | Real & Custom Radio Stations - Listen Free Online if you can get round the security (hide my ip etc)

Yosemite is amazing, went just as the snow was melting (late May but not sure if the snow lasted longer than usual) so the waterfalls were immense. Personally I preferred it to the Grand Canyon (still breathtaking!).

Fantastic news - loved the Grand Canyon but made the mistake of taking light aircraft to get there. Never felt so travel sick in my life, spent much of the excursion quite nauseous :( amazing experience though. Just booked a very nice looking B&B for a couple of nights by Shaver Lake.. another £230 down - ouch! Might need another beer!!!

Did San Francisco and Vegas earlier this month. Brilliant places. Watching the Leicester game at 7am in Planet Hollywood Casino's Sports Bar.

Lot of variety there and quite a few I'd love to visit myself. Washington DC is a lovely city but it's more of a place where people live and work - very slow pace and rather affluent. Only took in a day trip from NYC in Feb (bolt bus - $8 return, incredible service!) and really felt I 'did' most of it (much as I hate that phrase). Surprisingly quiet too and they have a fantastic public transport system but the most confusing metro system in the world

LA can be a bit threatening, we stayed on Santa Monica boulevard in a rather exposed-feeling comfort inn for three nights, which was an experience. Great to see Graumann's Chinese Theatre and the walk of fame etc, but a lot more 'commercial' feeling than a lot of California - which is to be expected. Moved to a different hotel in Anaheim to do the Disney/Universal thing which was awesome. Amazing pool bar, true Californians and a lot more my type of thing

San Francisco is amazing - great vibe, amazing for drinking, much cooler weather in mid-summer too. Again, fairly small so easily 'do-able' in a few days. the pace is so slow and leisurely. we wanted to see alcatraz but it books up MONTHS in advance so we're getting in early this time for when we go back. Again a bit more expensive but just a great place to visit/live (maybe oneday!)

New York is amazing for shopping/theatre/comedy/culture and I can't get enough of that stuff, we normally stay 3-5 nights to see the latest shows.

Vegas is what it is - if you like gambling it's great, if not then not so much but there's still amazing stuff to see and do.

Try KFOG FM when in San Francisco, typical smooth Californian AOR. So evocative of that great city. Makes an ideal soundtrack as you drive up to Napa/Sonoma or down to Monterey/Carmel. Try the website to sample the sort of stuff they play.

I would recommend Yosemite, truly stunning scenery.

If you fancy a bit of exercise try hiring a bike and cycling from Fishermans Wharf to Sausalito via the Golden Gate Bridge, have lunch then catch the ferry back which gives great views of the city, bridge and Alcatraz.

A San Fran jock when I was there in the early 1990s went by the name of Dan Francisco. Shamone!!

Unfortunately the East Coast craps all over the West imho, the daddy for my money being 95.5 WBRU out of Providence, Rhode Island.

I sometimes dip in. Got quite addicted to a right wing talk station from New York.

Never understood people who only listen/read things they agree with.

Utter nutters on there. May tru and find it again.

You sound a bit like me, America is just so vast that it amazes me. Not to mention that I have grown up on American films and sitcoms. I actually plan to retire when I am 45, things are going okay so far so should make it. I am going to sell my rental flat and spend a year travelling America. I plan to buy a decent second hand RV/Winnebago

winnebago | eBay <<something like these

and spend at least a few days in every state but obviously more time in the places I am more interested in, who knows I may travel longer depending on how I feel at the time.
