Gus Poyet salutes the Albion fans
GUS Poyet has declared it “job done” after guiding Albion into the Championship play-offs.
But he has also warned the Seagulls’ rivals to beware of his team in the end-of-season shoot-outs after securing a top six place with an eventful 2-1 win at Leeds.
Poyet told The Argus: “It’s job done. I know people will say ‘Come on, it’s not done’, but if anyone at Brighton, even the most positive person, would say that for sure we would be in the play-offs, they would take it and be delighted. It would be a dream come true and now we are there.
“We need to give the credit to the players and not celebrate because we still have the chance to finish fourth, but to make sure we are happy about what we have done so far which is amazing.”
Leo Ulloa headed a late winner at Elland Road against nine-man Leeds, who had Rodolph Austin and El-Hadji Diouf sent-off, Diouf for rubbing his genitals in front of the Albion fans after equalising from the spot.
The Seagulls had been reduced themselves to ten men, substitute Inigo Calderon seeing red for his challenge on Diouf for the penalty.
They are sure to stay fourth and clinch home advantage in the second leg of the play-off semi-finals if Crystal Palace fail to win their game in hand at Millwall tomorrow night.
And Poyet is adamant they have as much chance as anyone of being promoted to the Premier League after stretching their unbeaten run to eight games.
The Uruguayan said: “I am 100 per cent sure of that and we will try our best to take it because it is a great opportunity.
“The way we have done it, with the last few games unbeaten, winning away from home games that were very important for us and taking the chance at Leeds against ten first, then nine, shows the players are ready to go and have a good go at the play-offs.”
