David Lopez scored his ninth goal of the season against Blackpool last Saturday
Albion*boss Gus Poyet has praised the carefree form of Spanish midfielder David.
The former Athletic Bilbao player is on the best goalscoring run of his career as his one-year deal draws to a close.
David, right, heads for Leeds on Saturday with the chance to chalk up double figures in his first season in English football after slotting his ninth goal in 23 outings in the 6-1 destruction of Blackpool at The Amex.
Poyet said: “He’s playing for us like he is under contract for the next five years, which shows you the commitment of every single player.
“We had a few players on the pitch that are finishing their contracts and they don’t feel any nerves, they are just enjoying the time at the moment. I think that’s the key.”
Poyet believes the crop of experienced signings this season like David have given play-off pushing Albion a nice balance in the dressing room.
David has been joined at The Amex since last summer by fellow free-scoring Spaniard Andrea Orlandi, Tomasz Kuszczak, Bruno and Andrew Crofts.
Wayne Bridge, Dean Hammond and Matt Upson have also all been signed on season-long or long-term loans after Poyet had several players on short-term loans last season.
He said: “We have players this year with totally different experience in terms of games and the teams they have played for. The others have been here for long and know exactly what we want and what we do and they feel part of the club, so the mix makes this team better.
“That’s why, when you are missing key players, the rest of the squad is strong enough to get good results.
“It makes us a better team being a group, not having too many players in and out, not having to deal with mentalities, attitudes, characters. We know what we have got every day.
“A reflection of that is on the pitch. I want the players to be friends on the pitch. That is when you really come together and that is easier when we know each other very well.”
